Plans for the building
It has taken many years to get to get to where we are now. The latest consultations started in March 2017 and since then the designs have further evolved to accommodate feedback.
The original designs taken to consultation looked like this (please note, these are illustrations):
Feedback was taken on board and the plans changed to look like this:
Based on further feedback, the plans have evolved. The current plans now look like this:
Key changes that have been implemented since the planning application in May are:
• Redesign of the observatory roof
• Reduction of the height of the observatory
• Additional windows

The focus of the building design is to accommodate the new education programmes, exhibitions and activities being developed in partnership with conservation and research organisations.
The harbour features a mix of buildings within a Conservation Area and our aim has been to minimise impact and improve the public realm space. The changes to the Centre’s footprint are limited and there are no physical impacts on any Listed Buildings, as assessed in the Heritage Impact Assessment, which follows the guidelines set out by Historic Environment Scotland.

The harbour area is one of activity and change. We strongly believe that this proposal will enhance the area in a similar way to the construction of the original Seabird Centre seventeen years ago.
Click HERE for details of what the design proposals include, such as:
• new public vantage points which will be fully accessible 24/ 7
• interpretation of the local archaeology
• access to the harbour from Anchor Green
With the implementation of a detailed construction plan and programme, we will ensure that all the vital local businesses, activities and events can continue to fully operate. Pedestrian, vehicle and boat access will remain and the harbour can continue to be open for business.
