Celebrating Coastal Birds    

A photography exhibition by Daniel Doran and Tom Langlands

Taken over several years by two Scottish photographers with strong links to the Scottish Seabird Centre, this exhibition brings together a selection of framed and unframed images celebrating a few of the many birds that can be seen around Scotland’s coastline.

Photographed at many locations – including the Bass Rock and the Isle of May – this exhibition seeks to showcase the beauty of our coastal birdlife through high quality photographs.

Some of the species of birds featured in these images are giving rise to conservation concerns through dwindling numbers associated with climate change and diminishing food sources. Other species are surviving well but are threatened by man’s intervention affecting their habitats and feeding grounds. 

This exhibition seeks to draw awareness to the beauty and importance of these birds. 

A percentage of all sales are being donated to the Seabird Centre.

Tom Langlands

Tom is a retired Scottish architect, and award-winning photographer and journalist. He is passionate about Scotland’s heritage, its landscape and wildlife. He grew up on the doorstep of the Scottish Highlands and has spent over forty years fishing its rivers and capturing its beauty on film.

Now living in southwest Scotland, he still travels the length and breadth of the country taking images that capture the magic of the nation’s flora and fauna. Although he is a regular visitor to many of Scotland’s islands, the Bass Rock and the Isle of May - where a number of the images shown in this exhibition were taken - hold a special appeal.

His photography has featured in numerous exhibitions and his images and writing have appeared in publications at home and abroad. Tom also runs photography workshops as well as one-to-one wildlife photography tuition.

Through his photography Tom strives to say something about the character and behaviour of his subjects and to draw the viewer into a world that they may not often see but can nonetheless feel part of.

Daniel Doran

Daniel has lived in South East Scotland all his life, and from a very young age has held a keen interest in the natural world. He spends most of his free time exploring beautiful parts of East Lothian, the Scottish Borders and Northumberland, to discover the flora and fauna they have to reveal. More recently he has begun capturing his encounters on camera, starting his journey into natural history photography.  

The images in this particular exhibition were taken over a series of trips from North Berwick to both the Isle of May and the Bass Rock over the last year, in order to capture close encounters with some of our most iconic seabirds.
